Before you start the test
A few minutes of setup makes your results much more trustworthy:
• Close streaming apps, downloads, and cloud backups on all devices.
• Pause or disable VPNs and proxy tools.
• Connect via Ethernet for a baseline test of your raw plan speed.
• Restart your router if you have not rebooted in weeks.
• Test at different times — morning, evening, and peak hours.
Understanding your results
A complete speed test reports download Mbps, upload Mbps, ping (latency in ms), and jitter. Download affects streaming and browsing; upload matters for video calls and cloud backups; ping and jitter affect gaming and VoIP quality. Compare your results to your ISP's advertised plan — you should typically see at least 80% of the advertised speed on a wired test.
WiFi vs Ethernet speed tests
Always test Ethernet first to measure your ISP connection without WiFi variables. Then test WiFi where you actually use devices. A large gap between the two points to router placement, interference, or an older WiFi standard — not necessarily a bad ISP line.
How many times should you test?
Run at least three tests at different times on the same connection type. Average the download and upload numbers. One-off results can be misleading because of brief congestion or a background update you did not notice.
