Methodology

About Methodology

SpeedTesters measures download, upload, ping, and jitter by exchanging data between your browser and nearby Cloudflare test servers, then reporting results in real time.

Methodology matters because WiFi interference, VPNs, background apps, and peak-hour congestion change scores. Use Ethernet for a clean baseline, re-test a few times, and treat results as estimates — not a contractual ISP meter.

See the Disclaimer for accuracy limits and the Guide for how to interpret each metric.

How to use

  1. Read how download, upload, ping, and jitter are measured.
  2. Run a test on the homepage with background apps closed.
  3. Compare wired vs WiFi if results look inconsistent.

Frequently asked questions

Which network does the test use?

SpeedTesters uses Cloudflare’s global network for browser-based measurements.

Why do results vary?

Congestion, WiFi, VPN, and device load all change throughput and latency. Multiple tests give a clearer picture.
